Where to start selling clothing: Poshmark Canada, Vinted, Depop

Clothing can be an economical way to dip your toe into the resale market. If your little ones have grown out of their clothes rather than wearing them out, reselling them is a great way to recoup some of that money. There is no real market for used clothes that are not brand name so I would focus on only the pieces that are name brand and donate the rest. Space is a valuable commodity in reselling and you want to use it wisely.

Items that have stains or tears are also not good choices for resale. That is unless you want to try your hand at some extraordinary measures to remove the stains and repair the damage.

Now that you have a few items you would like to resell let's talk about which platform you would like to sell on. I personally started reselling clothes on Poshmark Canada. I like that they have an established brand that people recognize and a business model that they worked all the kinks out of in the US market prior to opening in Canada.

I think each of the three platforms are similar they just vary in fees and shipping. Poshmark is likely the most expensive, they also have the largest market of the three. I have found it great for selling items that smaller markets may not have the same call for.

Before you decide which platform to start with I suggest you create a seperate email for reselling. If you decide to grow your business later you will be glad you took this extra step.

In Canada it is expected that we will claim every sale on our income tax. I found that hard to believe too, but after researching it I found that even proceeds from a yardsale are theoretically income. Be sure to keep records of any online sales.

If you are thinking of making this your side hustle or going fulltime it is important to register your business with your province. If your sales are over $30,000 in a year you will also need to register for a federal account and collect taxes.

It is also a good idea to check with your city or township to be sure they allow ecommerce business in your area. Where I live we can have a home business as long as we employ no more than 1 person who does not reside with us, and we can not put signage all over.

Once you have checked into all these regulations you are all set to open an account on whichever platform you decide. If you choose to start with Poshmark Canada be sure to use our code:

and you will receive $15 towards your first purchase.

Our next post will give you tips about how to post your items for the most sales.
